From ancient times, undergarments have been present in culture. Primarily worn to protect the more expensive outer clothing from body oils and dirt, undergarments ranged from simple loincloths to the more complicated undergarments of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

The poor would have had to settle for lesser fabrics like rough linen, but Medieval and Renaissance upper class could have worn silk. In colder climates several layers of undergarment were probably worn.
