This ancient gown was worn by many early people and was popular in Roman and Byzantine times. It is shaped like a cross, and was appropriated as a distinctive garment by the enthusiastic and faithful followers of Christ, who wore angustus clavus (stripes) of deep red or purple.
The Dalmatica is a closed garment with wide 3/4 length sleeves and a slit neck.
