G0109
Dalmatica.
This ancient gown was worn by many early people and was popular in Roman and Byzantin times.
The Dalmatica is a closed garment with wide 3/4 sleeves and a slit neck.
The dalmatica is often ornamented by the angustus clavus, strips of trim.
The female version has angled sleeves and is floor length. (Male version can be found here.)
It is shaped like a cross, and was appropriated as a distinctive garment by the enthusiastic and faithful followers of Christ, who
wore angustus clavus (stripes) of deep red or purple.
In the 4th century the Dalmatica was improved. The Clavi bands were no longer restricted to colors. They became more elaborate.
Note: The cut of this garment served as the model for future dresses.
Trim can be added, Pictures is trim 221 which is a Roman Key and appropriate for the period.
Worn in the SCA, for LARP, in Biblical Plays as a biblical costume, as a roman soldier costume, as a roman centurion costume.
