Dresses developed from long loose tunics that were the customary attire of Greeks and Romans. Even before that, light sheath-like dresses were worn by Ancient Egyptians. By the Middle Ages, dresses became predominantly women's wear (though the male aristocracy and clergy maintained long flowing robes--ie:dresses). Through the centuries dresses have grown more elaborate and more representative of self- (and class-) expression.
