Hats and other Head Coverings

Paintings as far back as Ancient Greece and Rome depict men wearing hats, such as skull caps and straw hats. From an early age, a head covering of some kind was essential for Western women, regardless of status, and a "proper" woman would not be seen in public without one. These mainly included kerchiefs, scarves, veils, soft caps, etc. Structured hats for women started appearing around the end of the 16th century to match some of their male counterparts.
