From ancient times undergarments have been present in culture. From simple loincloths to the more complicated undergarments of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The poor would have had to have settled for lesser fabrics, but medieval and renaissance upper class could have silk. In colder climates several layers of undergarment were probably worn.
